Monthly Maintenance
for Windows 95/98/ME/XP
Note: The following steps should be taken at least once a month to
ensure your computer is running as fast as
possible
·
Run
the Disk Cleanup
1.
Click
on Start/Programs/Accessories/System
Tools/Disk Cleanup
2.
Click
on OK when it asks you what drive you want
to cleanup
3.
Check
the box next to the four items on the
cleanup list
4.
Click
OK
For XP Click Start/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools/Disk Cleanup
·
Run
Scandisk and Defrag
Before
running scandisk or defrag you must first
close any open programs; you can do this by
completing the following steps:
1.
Hold
down Ctrl and Alt (bottom left-hand corner
of the keyboard) and tap delete once.
You will now see a box in the middle
of the screen with a list of strangely named
programs.
2.
You
need to close all these programs except
for Explorer and Systray (you need to
leave those two running)
3.
Highlight
any of the programs
on the list (except for explorer and systray)
and then click on end task.
If this is done properly, the box
with the list of programs will disappear
4.
Repeat
steps 1-3 until every program on the list
has disappeared—except
for explorer and systray
For XP just close any open programs.
You don’t need to do the end task
step
Now
you are ready to run Scandisk and Defrag
